ISRAELI FLAG RAISED

Randwick City Council honours Yom Ha’atzmaut resolution

Members of the Jewish community and local councillors were in attendance as the Israeli flag was raised outside Randwick Town Hall.

The Israeli flag flew at Randwick Town Hall on Wednesday in celebration of Yom Ha’aztmaut.

A few members of the Jewish community attended the flag raising, along with councillors Daniel Rosenfeld, Andrew Hay and Bill Burst.

Rosenfeld successfully introduced the motion to fly the flag in celebration of Israel’s 75th year of independence, but during last week’s council meeting a Greens councillor attempted to trigger an “urgent” motion to rescind the resolution. Randwick Council stood firm despite the opposition, with Rosenfeld telling The AJN he initially introduced the motion to fly the flag given the prominent Jewish community in the Randwick LGA.

“The council has resolved to fly the Greek flag for Greek Independence Day, which I fully support, and I thought it fitting to also fly the Israeli flag,” he said.

“This was supported 10 to four, and hence became a council resolution.”
