WHEN 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip was triumphantly ridden by jockey Mark Zahra first past the post, two lengths in front of runner-up Emissary, Jewish businessman and horse racing enthusiast Sonney Roth was part of the French-bred horse’s ownership group that shared that magical moment together at Flemington.

Quite rightly, there were fist pumps, and some joyful tears, as it all started to sink in.

Expertly trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Gold Trip had the top weight in the field, but was able to go the distance when it counted, to win only its second race on Australian shores.

It had come second in the Caulfield Cup just a fortnight ago.

The horse’s potential to do well here was first noticed by Australian Bloodstock after it placed fourth in the 2020 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

They purchased it with a race like the Melbourne Cup in mind, and then sought additional part owners, eventually getting a group of more than 15 signed up, including Roth.

After the official presentation, Roth told The Age, “I went the early crow, but I can’t tell you how long that last 100m took!”.

“[Gold Trip was the] best horse in the race, and that’s why he had the top weight”.

It is understood the ownership group will consider plans to enter the six-year-old stallion in races in next year’s Autumn Carnival, but first it will enjoy a well-deserved rest.
