Saltpillar brings Beau Jest back to Melbourne

Saltpillar Theatre returns with Beau Jest in a full circle revival of the play it first staged in Australia.

Melbourne’s beloved Jewish community theatre company, Saltpillar Theatre, is heading back to the stage with a production of Beau Jest, and for the company, it’s something of a homecoming.

Founded in 1986, Saltpillar has built its reputation staging productions that speak to both Jewish and broader Melbourne audiences, and this latest choice feels particularly meaningful. The company has revealed they were the ones to premiere Beau Jest in Australia in 1994. Revisiting the play a generation later makes the 2026 season a full-circle moment for many in the community.

Beau Jest is an American comedy by James Sherman that follows a young Jewish woman who hires a non-Jewish actor to pose as her Jewish boyfriend to appease her traditional parents. It’s warm and witty, and rooted in the traditions of family life. For the theatre company, it’s exactly the kind of material Saltpillar was built for.

Saltpillar Theatre Company says the choice was a deliberate one.

“As a Jewish theatre company, Beau Jest holds a special place for us,” the company stated.

“The story speaks directly to a Jewish experience in such a relatable, affectionate way, and that connection to our community and our identity made it an easy choice. We wanted to offer our audience something that would genuinely lift their spirits, and Beau Jest does exactly that. It has a warmth and a wit that resonates broadly, and we felt confident it would connect with both our long-standing loyal audience and newer faces discovering us for the first time.”

When asked about rehearsals, the overwhelming response was that they have been an absolute joy. Throughout Pesach, both cast and crew frequently broke into Pesach song singalongs – Dayenu, apparently, has been a particular favourite – alongside the laughs that come with bringing the show’s comedic material to life.

“Whether it’s breaking out into Pesach song singalongs, laughing at all the shtick from the talented actors, or a heartwarming moment of appreciation for being in a safe rehearsal space, the amazing cast and crew behind the production have developed great chemistry already,” the company said.

The production is being directed by Peter Houghton, who has taken a warm approach to the material, “picking up on every nuance, every comedic beat, every quiet moment of heart”.

As for what audiences can expect on the night? Saltpillar is hoping for plenty of knowing smiles.

“We hope audiences simply allow themselves to be swept up in it. Beau Jest is full of moments that so many people will recognise, particularly those familiar with Jewish family life. The dynamics, the humour, the love underneath it all. We expect a lot of knowing nods and plenty of genuine laughter.”

Ultimately, though, they want people to walk out feeling joy.

“We want people to walk out feeling lighter than when they came in, and maybe with their cheeks a little sore from smiling.”

Beau Jest runs from May 16-31. For tickets, visit saltpillar.org.au
