Shadow Assistant Minister for Stronger Families and Stronger Communities Senator Leah Blyth visited Jewish community leaders at Caulfield Hebrew Congregation on September 5.

The visit marked the Senator’s first experience inside a synagogue, and was organised by the Lions of Zion (LoZ).

Welcoming her to the shule were LoZ founders Isaac Balbin, Joshua Kelman and Ya’acov Travitz, alongside community leaders from organisations including the Australian Jewish Association (AJA), Women’s International Zionist Organisation (WIZO), Rabbinical Council of Victoria (RCV) and Caulfield Shule Rabbi Daniel Rabin.

Blyth’s visit enabled community leaders to share their concerns and experiences, particularly in the wake of challenges faced by Jewish Australians since October 7.

AJA victorian director Tamir Aloni said, “I thank Senator Blyth for dedicating time from her demanding schedule to engage directly with the Jewish community’s concerns. Her unwavering support for Jewish Australians and their Zionist heritage is commendable and deeply appreciated.”

Similarly, co-president of WIZO Victoria Hani Hanam Papalia commented, “We are grateful to the Shadow Minister for Family Affairs for listening to WIZO’s voice on behalf of women and children in Melbourne and Israel.

“It’s critical that our concerns reach the halls of power, and we applaud leaders like Senator Blyth who stand firmly for justice and a secure future.”

Reflecting on her visit, Balbin said, “When I first met Senator Blyth in Adelaide, I was struck by her genuine curiosity despite her limited familiarity with the Jewish community’s recent struggles. Inviting her to Melbourne was a hopeful gesture, and her swift acceptance was truly humbling.

“Her presence here reflects a profound commitment to understanding our stories firsthand. I am confident she will carry these insights back to Adelaide and Canberra, amplifying our voices where it matters most. We are deeply honoured by her visit.”

Blyth remarked, “It was an honour to visit Caulfield Hebrew Congregation and stand with a community whose faith, resilience and contribution to Victoria and Australia enrich us all.

“Every Australian should feel safe to worship in peace. I stand unequivocally with our Jewish community against antisemitism in all its forms.

“At Caulfield Hebrew Congregation, I heard your love and hope for Australia (the synagogue had more Australian flags displayed than the Senate chamber). I saw families, tradition, and a deep commitment to caring for one another. That spirit is the beating heart of our multicultural nation.

“Thank you for welcoming me so generously. Your resilience and faith are an inspiration.”
