Shulman feeling ace after his 10th hole-in-one

For the average golfer, it is hard enough to score a single hole-in-one in a lifetime, or even four or five of them.

So it was truly an incredible moment for 77-year-old Monash Country Club member Graham Shulman when he achieved his 10th hole-in-one recently at his home course – the home of Maccabi golf in NSW. Remarkably, it was his second ace this year.

The first of his 10 was nailed in 1974 in Johannesburg’s Killarney Country Club in the country of his birth. Since then, aces followed in South Africa in 1977, 1979, 1982 and 1988.

Shulman joined Monash after migrating to Sydney in 1994, but his next ace took until 2018, and was followed up promptly with more holes-in-one in 2019 and 2020.

Of course, good luck plays a huge part every time a golfer produces a hole-in-one, but choosing the right club, the right shot to reach the green, and then executing to perfection, are also essential factors.

Shulman’s latest – and milestone 10th – ace happened on the par 3 third hole at Monash.

After five decades of playing golf, he plays off a handicap of 13, having once reached a handicap as low as four, and enjoys the sport as much as ever.

Shulman’s 10th ace even got a full column dedicated to it in the latest edition of Inside Golf magazine.

He can still remember scoring his first hole-in-one 52 years ago.

“It was a well-struck six-iron over the bunker at Killarney, pitching on the green and rolling into the cup,” he said.

“And it’s taken me five decades to score the 10th!”
