US ambassador Caroline Kennedy visited Hobart Synagogue, with the shule’s president Jeff Schneider saying, “During these dark days, the Jewish community in Tasmania appreciates the visit of the Her Excellency Ms Caroline Kennedy.”

The US embassy wrote on X about the visit: “At this time of tragic conflict, we are grateful to the members of the Hobart Synagogue community for welcoming us to the oldest synagogue in Australia, consecrated on July 4, 1845.

“Their small but mighty congregation comes from different backgrounds and traditions to form a vibrant community – including a few Americans. It was a privilege to learn and reflect together with Jeff Schneider, Lisa Eckstein and Laurence Herst.”
