Heffron Park’s 32 netball courts were a hive of activity for round one of the 2024 Randwick Netball Association season last Saturday.

Despite some showers in the morning, Maccabi Netball Club’s Net Set Go (U8 and U9) teams enjoyed playing in their first ever matches, and had an absolute ball.

The weather cleared and warmed up considerably from mid-morning, when Maccabi’s 15 junior teams – from U10s to U14s, and intermediate grade – took to the courts.

The aim for round one was to have fun and start putting into practice the skills and positional combinations and plans that were worked on during the pre-season.

Results for those Maccabi teams were seven wins, seven losses and one incomplete match.

In U13 matches, the Maccabi White division 1 team looked sharp and switched on as they led at every quarter to record an excellent 20-13 win over Mascot, while in division 3, Maccabi Blue proved too good on the day for Kincoppal Rose Bay, beating them 16-8.

Maccabi White coach Leeanne Michaelson said, “It was a great start to the season for these girls who have been improving every week at training and really brought those gains onto the court.”

Other solid wins by Maccabi teams included a 7-1 result in U10 division 3, an 18-7 victory in U11 division 3, a 17-13 win in U12 division 6, a dominant 19-3 result in U14 division 4, and a handy 13-5 victory in intermediate division 7.

And in U14 division 2, Maccabi White were 13-all at half-time against Kincoppal Rose Bay, and lifted in the third quarter to lead by 21-17, before the match had to suddenly stop due to a medical emergency at a nearby court.

The team’s coach, Jodi Rosenthal, praised her players for their effort, saying, “Well played – you were on top of them in that last quarter, so there’s lots to take from this game.”

Unfortunately, heavy rain set in after that, cancelling all afternoon round one matches, which would have featured Maccabi’s three women’s teams in grades A3, B1 and B2.

Maccabi Netball Club president Michelle Samuel told The AJN, “Maccabi had a great start to the season, with our players all excited to get on the courts, play their best, display great teamwork and have fun.

“We had some huge wins on the weekend – whether it be in the scorelines, or watching the smiles on the faces of our most junior players participating in their first ever game of netball.

“The club is focused on continuing to develop our players, coaches and umpires in 2024, so we can continue to grow the club, and community spirit.”
