Stars atwitter over High Holy Days
WELL-MEANING celebrities took to their Twitter accounts to wish Jewish followers well over the Yom Kippur fast.
THE celebrity microblogosphere lit up over the weekend with stars posting some weird and wonderful High Holy Day messages on social networking site Twitter.
From Homer Simpson to Justin Beiber, everyone wanted to get in on the act, wishing Jews around the world well over the fast, or, in the case of Jewish agitator Sarah Silverman, giving some Yom Kippur catering tips.
“This Yom Kippur brunch was a disaster,” Silverman tweeted alongside a twitpic of bacon rashers arranged in the shape of a swastika.
Homer Simpson’s official page had another bacon-related tweet.
“It’s Yom Kippur, when Jews don’t eat all day. Woo-oho, more bacon for me!”
There were, however, some more earnest messages.
Internet sensation turned pre-teen gargantua-star Justin Bieber was keeping it real for all his Yiddishe peeps, posting: “Hope that all are having a good fast 2day as they observe Yom Kippur”.
TV presenter Brooke Burke chimed in with: “I had a beautiful holiday with my family yesterday. So much to be thankful for. It’s amazing what a fast can do.”
Peaches Geldof, the daughter of Sir Bob Geldof and a prominent socialite (read: party girl), spent Yom Kippur with Jewish director beau Eli Roth and a pic of the pair was posted on Twitter with Geldof wearing a kippah. On her official page, she postulated: “It’s Yom Kippur tomorrow, hope you’re fasting.”
Kabbalist cougar Demi Moore (not Jewish, it has to be said) bragged about her Yom Kippur spent with hubby and the most followed human on Twitter, Ashton Kutcher.
“Had a wonderful day with hubby and my baby girl Ru! Finished our fast for Yom Kippur and now we are ready for food!!” tweeted Moore.
But predictably, the premiere posts came from the funny folk. Late night doyen Conan O’Brien lamented the commercialisation of the High Holy Days: “Is it just me or has Yom Kippur become way too commercial?”, while the grand old dame of Jewish comedy Joan Rivers wished Jews everywhere well over the fast. “Sundown is approaching. Know what that means? No Tweeting and No Eating! To everyone in Twitterworld … HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!”
