'We are this generation' Jewish Care launches 'Gesher Generation'

Strengthening connection, wellbeing and support

Jewish Care Victoria has launched Gesher Generation, a new initiative for 35–60-year-olds, recognising a cohort that sits at the heart of Jewish community life.

Launched at an event hosted by Adam Joel and Shelley Kline, the evening brought together community members to speak about mental health and the evolving needs of the community.

Gesher, meaning “bridge” in Hebrew, reflects the role this generation plays in connecting families, community and the future of Jewish life. As Vanessa Brott, manager of Gesher Generation, shared on the night: “We are this generation.”

Often balancing the demands of raising children, supporting ageing parents and building careers, this group carries a significant responsibility, yet has historically lacked a dedicated space for support.

The launch event featured a panel discussion with Liam Stocker, Jacqui Louder and Dion Szer, who shared personal insights into mental health, resilience and the pressures of modern life.

The initiative comes at a critical time. Jewish Care has reported a significant increase in demand for mental health services in recent months, particularly following the events of October 7 and the Bondi attack. This has been accompanied by a growing need for culturally informed, community-based support.

“Gesher Generation is about creating a space where people feel seen, understood and connected,” Vanessa said, “Not just in times of crisis, but in the everyday realities of life.”

Jewish Care continues to provide a wide range of essential social services, including mental health support, financial counselling, employment assistance, NDIS support and family violence prevention.

Many of these programs receive little to no government funding and rely on the support of the community.

The launch of Gesher Generation marks the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen connection, wellbeing and support for this vital generation.
