I had been to Israel before when I was 7 years old but never truly understood the significance or history of the land. Only last year at 16 years old, on the Masada College Israel Tour (MIT) trip, did I fully understand the importance and beauty of Israel – and it changed my perspective profoundly.

We spent our first night at the Kotel, praying, dancing and singing. Being able to go right up to the wall, I felt extremely connected to my faith; being at the one place that unites all Jewish people, a precious relic of ancient times. Against the chaos of Israeli life, everyone was so deeply engrossed in prayer. In the Kotel’s calm and stabilising presence, I reflected on how, despite years of oppression and hatred against us, the Jewish people remain intact. That we can pray at our holiest site and connect with Hashem similarly to the ways of ancient times – despite all our hardships – makes me extremely proud to be Jewish.

We also explored old Jerusalem and the City of David where we walked through water tunnels and visited various museums with a Zionist and Israeli focus. Many of us already had a background in Israeli history but we learnt so much more. It was interesting to view relics and stones dating back thousands of years and even partake in an archaeological project, sifting through the rocks of the Temple Mount.

We saw the holy sights of Tzfat, the lively bustle of Tel Aviv’s Carmel Market and learnt about the complex history of the Golan Heights. There, in Kfar Kedem, we got to ride donkeys and experience what life was like during mishnaic times.

A highlight was definitely climbing up Masada – as Masada College – and learning about the rebellion that took place there.

Then there was our sunrise hike on Mount Tzfachot, where we prayed Shacharit overlooking Israel’s surrounding countries. Floating in the Dead Sea lived up to all our expectations, as did water sports in Eilat.

But one of my favourite experiences was hiking and camping in the Negev desert, where we saw the beautiful mountains and sunrises. Sometimes the walk could be challenging but it was a great bonding experience and an opportunity to experience a side of Israel I had never seen. We rode camels and slept in Bedouin tents, and I was also able to visit family members who I had never met, or who I had not seen since I was young.

The final days were spent back in Jerusalem, exploring Israeli food and culture in the Machane Yehuda Shuk and meeting many young Israelis. Our visit to the Kotel on Shabbat evening is a vision that will remain with me forever; everyone singing and dancing together – with some Israelis joining us – created an unforgettable atmosphere.

I am beyond grateful to have been able to have this opportunity to visit Israel with MIT because it is something I will never forget. It’s not every day you get to visit another country surrounded by all your friends! This trip has taught me so much about myself, strengthening my Jewish identity and religious practice. Above all, MIT has shown me the unique beauty of Israel: its deep-rooted history and warm atmosphere, giving me the experience of a lifetime.
