Year 6 students at Mount Scopus College recently created an huge outdoor mural, alongside artist in residence Glen Downey.

The artistic piece showcases an Australian scene, under the theme of “Reimagining our landscape” and was developed by Downey and the students together.

During their research, students also visited the Heide Museum of Modern Art, where they were inspired by the landscape and the artworks they saw.

This helped provoke students’ thinking about the power of creative expression through the arts, and Downey guided the students in designing and painting the mural.

Each character in the mural represents diversity, individuality and the joy of coming together to celebrate our wonderful country and community.

Koalas and kangaroos in Scopus uniforms enjoying classic Aussie treats of lamingtons, fairy bread and sausage rolls, against a backdrop of iconic Melbourne landmarks and flora and fauna, allowed the students to combine their Jewish and Australian heritage.

Students created the 15-square metre masterpiece using long-wearing exterior paint and were engaged in the entire process from concept development to the finished mural, which they have named “Furry Bread”.

The mural was officially unveiled last month at a special student-led celebration.
