FIVE Australian year 10 students have been selected for the annual Technion – Israel Institute of Technology’s prestigious SciTech Program, which returns this year after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Jessica Want, Mia Handel, Amber Adno and Kiara Lapedus from Moriah College, as well as Josh Wood from Masada College, will be among 60 students from all over the world taking part in the three-week program beginning later this month.

The internationally selective program enables senior high school students from around the world to work and study in laboratories with Technion students and professors.

“I have always been passionate about science, so when I heard about the Technion SciTech Summer Program through Masada, it sounded like an amazing opportunity,” Wood told The AJN.

“I am looking forward to exploring a wide range of scientific areas, as well as the opportunity to experience a new country and culture. I expect that the program will help provide clarity as to what area of science I should follow as a career after school. At the moment I believe that will be chemistry; however, the wide array of scientific areas covered in SciTech will help me to make a better informed decision.”

Adno said she is looking forward to going on the program and hopes it will help her “obtain a further understanding into my passions – science, maths and medicine”.

Previous participants on the program have described it as “life-changing” and many of them have gone on to study at Technion.

CEO of Technion Australia Yoash Dvir told The AJN about what is in store for this year’s participants.

“It will be more of a tasting menu this year,” Dvir said.

“They will see a lot of labs and speak to a lot of professors – they will basically get a taste of Technion. People in previous years said that participating in the program changed their lives – it’s what made them go into science or computer science or chemistry or biology. The program put them on the science route for university – it’s that impactful.”
