Sumption to step down as Sydney Jewish Museum CEO
Sydney Jewish Museum CEO Kevin Sumption will step down in June 2027 following the museum’s reopening.
Sydney Jewish Museum CEO Kevin Sumption will conclude his tenure in mid-June 2027, after leading the institution through its reopening.
Sumption joined the museum in February 2022 and has overseen its redevelopment and the creation of the Museum for Contemporary Jewish Life, described by the museum as the most significant transformation in its history.
He also oversaw the temporary relocation of operations and the establishment of an interim exhibition and education space so school programs could continue during construction, and an expansion of the museum’s education work with schools, businesses, government and community organisations, particularly on antisemitism.
Sumption came to the museum from the Australian National Maritime Museum, where he was chief executive and a director for almost 10 years. He had previously been director of exhibitions and programs at the Royal Museums Greenwich in London, and held positions at the Powerhouse Museum and the University of Technology Sydney.
Museum president Greg Shand said Sumption had led the institution through one of the most consequential periods in its history.
“On behalf of the Board, I thank him for his service and contribution. As we look ahead to its opening and this exciting next chapter, we recognise the important contribution Kevin has made to bringing this landmark project to fruition,” Shand said.
“The agreed timing provides important continuity for the Museum. Kevin will continue to lead the organisation through reopening, while giving the Board the appropriate time to conduct a comprehensive search for its next CEO.”
Sumption said the completion of the capital works was a natural point for a leadership transition.
“With the capital works approaching completion and the Museum preparing to reopen in June 2027, this is an appropriate time to prepare for the next chapter in the Museum’s leadership, and for me personally,” he said.
“I am proud of what has been achieved over the past five years and of the position the Museum is in today, with a strong team, an ambitious new curatorial offering and an increasingly important role in the community.
“It has been a true honour to serve as CEO of such an important institution. When I conclude my tenure, I leave with great confidence in the Museum’s future and in the opportunities ahead for its next leader.”
The board will shortly begin a search for Sumption’s successor, who will lead the museum from redevelopment and reopening into the operation and growth of the expanded institution.
