Teaching the value of community and connection

Teachable moments happen well beyond the classroom.

Emanuel School's Northern Territory Journeys experience.

In May, 20 Emanuel School students and their parents visited the Northern Territory for nine days of adventure, exploration and introspection, for Emanuel School’s Northern Territory Journeys.

Since the first trip in 2011, more than 750 Emanuel primary and high school students, parents and staff have had the opportunity to learn first-hand about Aboriginal Australia by visiting the NT’s magnificent locations while connecting with each other through shared experiences. A highlight of the trip is the opportunity to spend three days with the Jilkminggan community and, in particular, students at the Jilkminggan School.

When asked about their stand-out experiences, every student mentioned the visit to the school, along with the opportunity to enjoy the many waterfalls and areas of natural beauty.

Milla Goldberg, who joined the trip with her mum, recalled that she “loved being with the kids from Jilkminggan and meeting so many new people,” while for Lila Friedman, one of her most memorable experiences was “going to the hot springs at night-time and floating in the warm and quiet water”.

Emanuel School principal Andrew Watt feels that over the many years of visiting the Northern Territory, students and families have had valuable opportunities to explore new cultures, and learn about them and from each other.

From creating books together in English and Kriol to learning how to make damper and challah together, this cross-cultural experience leaves an indelible mark in an important time of the children’s lives.
