The latest in the arts world

New shows on ChaiFlicks and a new Ottolenghi book. What else is new in the world of arts?

New on ChaiFlicks

ChaiFlicks have added a number of exciting and interesting titles to stream from the comfort of your own home.

The Tollbooth is a feature comedy focusing on a Jewish family from Brooklyn through the eyes of Sarabeth, a struggling painter in her first year out of art school, as she questions the values of her traditional parents.

African Exodus, a ChaiFlicks exclusive, documents the 60,000 Africans who have fled to Israel over the past decade, and explores what many have coined, Israel’s “other refugee crisis”.

Based on the novel by Elie Wiesel, Dawn dramatically details the story of Elisha who has just been chosen to kill a captain in the British Army occupying Palestine who has been taken hostage. Having just survived the Holocaust, Elisha grapples with the notion of committing this irrevocable act.

While it was shown in Canada a couple of years ago, Cheating Hitler: Surviving the Holocaust has just been streamed in Australia, featuring on SBS and now SBS On Demand.

The documentary follows three Canadian Holocaust survivors who journey to the locations that shaped their childhood: their hometowns, the extermination camps and the spots where they hid during the war.

Helen Yermus, Maxwell Smart and Rose Lipsyzc share their stories alongside input from historians, genealogists and forensic experts.

Reviewing the work of Chaim Bill Meyer

A new book written by Rabbi Shimon Cowen explores the art of the contemporary Australian artist Bill (Chaim) Meyer.

Meyer was born in Germany in 1942, which according to Meyer himself, had great bearing on his art. Rabbi Cowen explains it as “an attempt to rectify the world and culture which had produced the Holocaust and all of it murderous predecessors”.

Meyer has lived in Europe, the US and Israel but maintains a studio base in rural Australia.

In The Art of Chaim Bill Meyer, Rabbi Cowen surveys the creative life of Meyer, including his art studies, his affiliation with religious orthodoxy and his most recent work.

The Art of Chaim Bill Meyer can be purchased at ijc.com.au, $40 (RRP) and is available on Kindle, $9.99 (RRP).
