The Rosh Hashanah winners are in
'We look forward every year to seeing the plethora of fantastic entries,' AJN editor-in-chief Gareth Narunsky said.
Students from Leibler Yavneh College have won both categories in the The AJN‘s Rosh Hashanah card and poetry competition.
Ella Smolarski (12) designed the winning card (pictured), which was chosen for its bright colours and its focus on key symbols of Rosh Hashanah including apples, honey, pomegranates and the shofar.
“We look forward every year to seeing the plethora of fantastic entries,” AJN editor-in-chief Gareth Narunsky said. “Only one can win, however, so a hearty mazal tov to Ella.”
Meanwhile, Ivy Zilberman, also 12 years old, won the poetry segment of the competition.
“Her melding of the themes of renewal, faith, family and food encompasses what Rosh Hashanah is all about,” said Narunsky.
“What a fantastic poem.”
The winning poem:
Rosh Hashanah is finally here,
It’s my favourite time, starting off the New Year,
Tishrei begins, when Elul ends,
We read the Machzor and make amends,
Hearing the shofar blow every day,
Going to shul, to reflect and pray,
A meal together, with Challah that’s round,
Enjoying it dipped, with the honey dripping down
Pomegranates, apples and all things sweet,
I love Rosh Hashanah,
Now let’s go and eat!
