MEMBERS of the National Council of Jewish Women of Australia (NCJWA) joined forces with more than 200 breast cancer survivors and advocates at a national summit to share information about breast cancer issues.
The summit was held in Melbourne from August 13-15 and hosted by the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).
Isabelle Shapiro, who represented NCJWA’s Jewish Women Breast Cancer Network, said the summit offered information and inspiration as well as some practical ideas to take back to the Jewish community.
“Local breast cancer groups are a great source of support for women dealing with breast cancer,” she said. “Coming together with women from around Australia and connecting with their experiences really brings home how important linking in with the national network is.”
Governor-General Quentin Bryce, a long-standing supporter of women with breast cancer and BCNA patron, opened the summit.
Delegates heard presentations from medical and oncology experts, psychologists, personal development specialists and communications and technology leaders.
The focus of the event was for the survivors to share their stories, strengthen their networks and work towards better outcomes for women living with breast cancer and their families.
BCNA is the peak national organisation representing Australians affected by breast cancer. It links together more than 240 community support groups for those dealing with breast cancer.
NCJWA NSW launched the Jewish Women Breast Cancer Network in October 2008. The network, which offers one-on-one support for women diagnosed with breast cancer, is preparing for its annual Pink Sunday event on Sunday, October 18 in Woollahra.
