A Coalition government in Victoria would provide a major boost to Jewish community security by providing funding to the Community Security Group (CSG).

The plan, announced by Liberal candidate for Caulfield David Southwick this week, ahead of the November 27 election, was immediately welcomed by the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV).

Southwick said the proposed $40,000 annual grant would address an anomaly in which the CSG, believed to be Victoria’s only volunteer community security outfit, is treated as if it were a private security firm and has to pay full registration fees.

“I was amazed to learn that the CSG was treated like any other private money-making security group and had to pay such licence fees, which are funded through local fundraising activities,” he said.

Southwick said the CSG deserved government help, as its members support the work of local police, protecting the community from threats.

“CSG is a great organisation and their work is vital to ensure the ongoing safety of our community. I have experienced the great work CSG does firsthand through volunteering at my children’s local school at Mount Scopus College.”

JCCV president John Searle told The AJN the roof body welcomes the proposal.

“Our community faces security threats beyond those of most communities and we always appreciate the necessary assistance.”

He said the Jewish community faces security concerns “over and above” those of most other communities.

“The recognition of that fact by any government or proposed government is welcome.”

ALP candidate Heather Abramson said she had sought advice on whether the Brumby Government would offer a similar grant, but did not have any information at the time of going to press.
