Welcoming space for sharing and connection

Jewish Care Victoria and the National Council of Jewish Women Australia (Vic) are launching the first cancer support group, Women’s Cancer Support Circle, for Jewish women who are going through treatment or adjusting to life after, on May 20 at 7pm in Caulfield.

“When I went through treatment for breast cancer, I really felt that a safe and welcoming space was needed in the Melbourne Jewish community for those facing cancer to share and connect, and I’m grateful NCJWA (Vic) and Jewish Care responded to my concerns,” said committee organiser Sharyn Kolieb.

“That need has only grown more profound in the wake of rising antisemitism.”

The first Cancer Support Circle will be facilitated by Renee Gani who has over a decade of professional experience in cancer not-for-profits including Breast Cancer Network Australia. Gani was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago and started a social media support group online called “JEWBEWB” for women to share advice.

This will be a monthly support group and future meetings are planned to include sessions with a psychologist as well as wellbeing activities such as art therapy and meditation.

Jewish Care stated to The AJN, “Jewish Care is proud to support the Cancer Support Circle in partnership with NCJWA (Vic), creating a space where women navigating cancer or life beyond it can come together in connection, understanding and support.

“At Jewish Care, we see firsthand the profound impact that illness can have, not only physically, but emotionally and socially. During these moments, community becomes incredibly important. Having a safe space to share experiences, feel understood and connect with others who truly ‘get it’ can make an enormous difference. This circle reflects the strength of community care at its best, women supporting women, sharing wisdom, vulnerability and hope.

“We are honoured to help foster initiatives that remind people they do not have to face difficult experiences alone.”

NCJWA (Vic) president Anna Serry added, “At NCJWA (Vic), we are committed to supporting women through every stage of life – including during the challenges of cancer treatment and recovery. We are proud to come together with Jewish Care and offer the Women’s Cancer Support Circle.”
