MEMBERS of B’nai B’rith’s Melbourne Mitzvah Lodge tried their hand at comedy on Sunday, with a live performance of Would I Lie to You.

Their version of the popular television show format raised funds for Making a Difference, a charity that supports Jewish students in the community who need financial assistance in the last two years of their schooling.

The production featured two teams of three people, each telling outrageous stories and the opposing team had to discern whether they were true or not.

One cast member told the story “I have been mistaken for a lady of the night twice”, prompting gales of laughter from the 100-strong audience, who joined in with questions for the panellists at various points. The cast was made up of community volunteers and leaders including Tony Weldon, chairman of Courage to Care.

The function raised over $3000, with the bursaries already having been dispersed to students in need, assisting them in buying books, uniforms and computers, as well as paying for school camps and excursions.

The money will help support 15 students through their VCE or equivalent program.

Making a Difference was founded in 1996 and has raised over $227,000 for financially insecure high school students.

Chairperson of Making a Difference Martha Vanderhoek said, “The committee and actors have put their heart and souls into this to make it a fun and memorable event.”

She made special reference to the host of the show and president of Melbourne Mitzvah Lodge Janet Kohn and her husband John for personally donating $1000 to the cause.
