40th birthday rolls on with challah

Emanuel School continued its 40th anniversary celebrations last Friday with a special Kabbalat Shabbat and ‘challah make’.

More than 620 primary school students, parents and staff came together for a morning of prayer, singing, dancing and using 90 rolls of baking paper, 50 litres of oil and 420kg of challah dough.

A parent shared their expert plaiting tips and students took their creations home to be baked and then blessed, at their Shabbat dinners.

Students were gifted a special book – The Great Challah Make – written with the help of Adina Roth, the school’s head of Jewish life.

On page 5, she reflects, “Challah is like an ancient app that we use, with a pinch of salt, to remember what really matters in life … on Shabbat, our day of rest.”

Kindy parent Amy Friedlander, said the event had a beautiful vibe, with the “bonus of learning how to make round challot and neater strands”.

Year 3 student Paz Lywood said, “It was fun and I was impressed with my dad’s challah rolling!”
