Menorah a ‘beautiful symbol’

JEWISH community leaders rubbed shoulders with senior NSW politicians last Thursday at the official inauguration of Parliament House’s menorah.

President of the Legislative Council Don Harwin and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Shelley Hancock did the honours in unveiling the menorah, which was donated by Rabbi Pinchus Feldman, spiritual Leader of Sydney’s Yeshiva Centre.

Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello was on hand to represent the Premier, while Opposition Leader John Robertson attended.

Thanking the Yeshiva Centre and Jewish community on behalf of Barry O’Farrell, Dominello called the menorah a “beautiful symbol” and praised the contribution Jews had made to New South Wales.

“As people roam around the Parliament, it is important that we have a sense of history and we show the enormous diversity that exists in our great state, and this is part of our history,” he said. “The Jewish community are an integral part of the fabric of who we are in New South Wales.”
